How many crises are there in Europe? First, there is a sovereign debt crisis, which is plain to see just looking at bond markets. Second, there is the crisis of competitiveness in European periphery countries, which is exacerbated by their membership of the monetary union. Third, there is a crisis of Europe’s banking system, which desperately needs recapitalisation.

But there is a fourth European crisis that has so far escaped the attention of even many professional observers. And yet, this fourth and largely unknown crisis has the potential to overshadow all other crises. It is Europe’s escalating balance of payments crisis.

Ahead of critical talks starting next week, most of the world’s leading economies now privately admit that no new global climate agreement will be reached before 2016 at the earliest, and that even if it were negotiated by then, they would stipulate it could not come into force until 2020.

The eight-year delay is the worst contemplated by world governments during 20 years of tortuous negotiations on greenhouse gas emissions, and comes despite intensifying warnings from scientists and economists about the rapidly increasing dangers of putting off prompt action…

The US is threatening to derail next week’s UN summit on climate change by refusing to sign off on a global fund for protecting the environment, it was reported last night.

American negotiators, backed by Saudi Arabia, were said to be holding up the passage of the Green Climate Fund, a $100 billion (£65 billion) pot designed to help developing nations combat climate change.

The fund was one of the few tangible measures to emerge from the 2009 Copenhagen summit and is seen as a crucial gesture by the world’s wealthiest nations to show they are prepared to share the cost of cutting emissions.

Or perhaps I should rant about the Holy See’s simultaneous call for a “Central World Bank” to solve the planet’s current economic woes. One might imagine that after the Vatican Bank scandals, the P2 rogue Masonic lodge infiltration, and the Calvi murder, Rome would be far too embarrassed to lecture the financiers, even if the rest of the international banking community is in disgrace also, but not so. Like the Scarlet Woman of Revelation, Rome has no shame, even though the Institute for Religious Works, as its bank is called in Vatican doublespeak, was fined over 23 million euros last December for money laundering!

These anti-sexual shenanigans relate to the world economic order because the Vatican cannot think in any other way than authoritarian paternalism. As the Roman Church has since Constantine, the pope calls for top-down running of the world by the elite. Let the rich manage the poor, and let the Church guide them both.

The document’s agenda is boldly announced in its title: Towards Reforming the International Financial and Monetary Systems in the Context of Global Public Authority. And it does not hesitate in stating that the goal is nothing less than “a public Authority with universal jurisdiction”; in other words, aworld government.

The pope’s note has the expected criticism of capitalism, bravely opposing “the idolatry of the market”. But this is not to do anybody any favors, but rather to form a New World Order. As the document says (emphasis added):

Of course, this transformation will be made at the cost of a gradual, balanced transfer of a part of each nation’s powers to a world authority and to regional authorities, but this is necessary at a time when the dynamism of human society and the economy and the progress of technology are transcending borders, which are in fact already very eroded in a globalizes world.

As you read this the world continues to teeter-totter on the brink of economic collapse.

I am going to speak some truth here, to “the Man” who is deaf to the Peoples.

I fire this missive from my tent as the indignant one. Fasten your seat belts because this article is going to be a fast and bumpy ride. The following is my perspective and my perspective alone, although i know that i am not alone. I was at the Occupy Vancouver Movement at the Art gallery on Oct 22. When controversy reigned over it’s foundation.

It was over the placing of the acknowledgement that the Vancouver “Occupation” was on unceded Coast Salish territories(Nations are also not named). It was agreed that it was to be placed first at the Oct 8 General Assembly at the Woodwards Atrium. However, they said it was a human error that it was placed in the third paragraph and also read out loud that way for every GA since.

Apology, accepted however, i was there the next night and it was like Groundhog Day.

The exact same “error” occurred. Also, a native elder was greatly disrespected and a few people from our community walked away, myself included. The problem is this “error” which can not be now called an error still occurs and has not even been changed on the “official” Occupy Vancouver website as of Oct 28. This is not a simple matter but a foundational one. One could contrast this with the DTES Neighbourhood Council Constitution for example.

Robert Desjarlait (Red Lake Ojibwe Nation) writes “Then there is the matter of decolonization. The question is: the decolonization of what, of whom? How can decolonization be a part of the process if the occupiers are occupying occupied land?

The dominance of a white majority involved with the OWS movement explains why decolonization isn’t included in the proposed list of demands issued as of ‘(Oct 28– 20 demands are given, the words decolonization, first nations, tribes are non-existent- i ask how can those who ask for Justice, Equality and Love do so on the backs of the most abused and oppressed? h.d.)

Now, the way i see it is, the Occupy Movement is the best friend the “System” aKa “the Man” has. They are in fact giving wise dispensation to the ‘Man”. You could even say that they are the children, the progeny of “the Man”. Even literally, if you think that the Baby Boomer generation of the Sixties who “fought the Man” now are for the most part the richest, most powerful generation in history with $Trillions in wealth. They have become “the Man” and in their ranks are PM Stephen Harper, Barack Obama, Bill Gates, Bill and Hillary Clinton, George W Bush, etc

But “the Man”, like his father before him Zeus, and his father before him Cronus will eat his children. He will crack skulls. He becomes Vader, and he will fight his children. “The Man”, has become Wendigo(Cannibal), Goliath and Rabid. I, recommend we show “the man” mercy—euthanasia is the best option.

I believe that we can be Allies with the Occupy Movement, in the same way, Tecumseh, was allies with pre-confederate canada in the War of 1812.

Now, central bankers, billionaires, even the Vatican, the Pope have given the Occupy Movement their blessings. This movement is if you will, the death spiral-cry of ‘the man” And once they find out “the man” bleeds and can not heal himself. It is game over.

The true benefactor, and defender of the Realm of Caesar, recently bared its beastly head–the Vatican, Pope Benedict xvi came out for the first time in history to propose detailed solutions to the world economic crisis. His proposal is the height of corruption, abuse, tyranny, and evil. A New World Central Bank and a coordinating global world political authority. The Big Daddy, the Mother of all central banks and political Authorities—the ultimate Abomination.

The crisis the human species face is not ultimately a crisis of economics or even morality. It is a crisis of the human heart. The light that is within humanity is nearly extinguished. If we can not collectively reignite this light, which will be a Protean effort, the human species will go extinct.

Now, Queen Christy Clark and Prince Rich “Uranium” Coleman have cruelly refused to

open low-barrier winter HEAT shelters this year and Environment canada predicts the coldest winter in 20 years. I refuse to let even one person die a preventable death this winter. So, on November 16 3:30pm, i will pitch my tent at Crab park known in Squamish as Luk‘luk‘i, meaning Grove of Sacred Trees (and by the Sacred Waters of Burrard Inlet). The exact site of a historical Squamish village.

And i myself on permanent disability am suppose to be on the highest priority for BC Housing but i havn’t got my housing yet—i will not make it through another winter—i’m tired. I know i will not be alone-we have a Rock Memorial to our Murdered and Missing Women there and i know they will stand with me, with us.

I don’t have a criminal record. So “the man” will have to criminalize me..

To law enforcement, and penultimately, the military i say—why don’t you do to me what you did to them, and to Harriet Nahanee, to Frank Paul…If you jail me, i’ll be back, if you beat me, i’ll be back, if you put me in an insane asylum, I’ll be back, if you kill me-i still will not shatter, I’ll be back…

These are my list of demands:

1. That Queen Christy Clark and Housing, Energy and Mines Prince Rich”Uranium” Coleman open immediately emergency HEAT shelters for the People
2. That Gregor Robertson and Vision Vancouver commit to moratorium on new condos in the Downtown Eastside just as Ellen Woodsworth and COPE has promised or is COPE a junior partner?
3. That Gregor Robertson and Vision Vancouver commit to or better what Ellen Woodsworth and COPE has promised the Downtown Eastside for socially affordable housing or is COPE a junior partner?
4. That Queen Christy Clark and Housing, Energy and Mines Prince Rich”Uranium” Coleman or Adrian Dix commit to rejecting the Enbridge Northern Gateway Tarsands Pipeline and the Kinder-Morgan Trans Mountain Tar Sands Pipeline expansion (more super oil tankers) for Burrard Inlet, Vancouver

Now, you can scrap all these demands for one:

Place– Love, Compassion, Justice and Freedom at the centre of economy, society, and civilization

Families protest government cuts to CLBC

A group of demonstrators gathered in downtown Vancouver Sunday to protest government funding and programming cuts to Community Living British Columbia.

Families of people with developmental disabilities expressed fears about the future of their loved ones in light of the lack of government support.

Kimberley Yanko, mother of a child with disabilities, said that her family feels left out of Premier(Queen) Christy Clark’s ‘Families First’ campaign.

“I watch Christy Clark saying ‘change is good,’ but there’s a bad way of doing things and a good way of doing things,” she said.
Queen Christy Clark is also with Alberta a big supporter of PM Stephen Harper’s

insane Crime Omnibus Bill, Ontario and Quebec are not supporters.

Earlier, this Spring myself and a few others Occupied Queen Christy Clark’s campaign headquarters at Point Grey(the beloved Gordon Campbell’s old riding), to get her to listen to us, about extending the funding to the emergency HEAT shelters. She had no time for us but arranged a meeting to see Prince Rich”Uranium” Coleman at the boardroom of BC Housing that afternoon(to get us out of the office)
At the meeting, i told Prince Rich, three times that he was endangering lives. He told me” You told me three times, i’m endangering lives-i don’t think so”. There was zero constructive dialogue-he refused to even engage everyone there in a positive manner. He was just there to “blow us off”, give us the “bum’s rush”.

Well sir you are endangering lives, everyone from thr City of Vancouver,

including the Mayor Gregor Roberton and his rival for mayoralty Susan Anton says so. So does everyone in Vancouver Downtown Eastside. So do agencies, advocates, religious organizations, the homeless, voters etc

I see that you and your Liberal cronies can spend $6 million for legal fees on liberal Insiders( see BC Rail Scandal) but can’t pay legal fees for the most affected groups in the Downtown Eastside for the Murdered and Missing Women’s Inquiry.

I see you Prince Rich “Uranium”Coleman are fast and loose with $30million, but can’t afford to protect the most vulnerable people in the City of Vancouver. By immediately opening the HEAT Shelters, for pennies less.

The Grove of Sacred Trees was long ago cut down for the world’s Elite, masts for Sail-boats and Yacht’s—the Trees- Red Cedar were some of the oldest, largest trees in the world. They have called me, as well as the Sacred Waters of the Burrard Inlet—they are in my every corpuscle and breath i take. They live in me.

The Grove of Sacred Trees, is a sanctuary for the peoples. It is not a Dog Park. I have witnessed many times, Condo owners letting their dogs piss on the Memorial for our Murdered and Missing Women.

You fine the poor and homeless, including myself for pissing in public when we have nowhere to go—lack of public facilities—by the way the fine is $250. My challenge to the by-law doesn’t happen till next spring or summer almost 1.5 years later, by the way. But your dogs piss freely in areas they’re not suppose to be with fines listed everywhere up to $2000. Dogs, it seems matter more than some people.

–Now, I’m going to tell a true story that took place in Toronto in the early Nineties. The Mike Harris(Flaherty) government had just slashed the Welfare rates by 23% in order to pay for Tax reductions for the rich and middle-class—the People stormed Queen’s Park-i ended up in the front line some how on the steps of Queen’s Park. Their was a few thousand people pushing to storm the doors of Legislature. Now there was a young woman beside me who i did not know, maybe 20yrs old at most. There were dozens of Riot Police.

The police were wielding there batons, people were pushing from behind-the young woman and i were being pushed from behind. There was a over-zealous young riot cop in front of us. She, did nothing but he struck her with his baton. I was shocked– he raised his baton and he was going to strike her on her head—i instinctively in a flash, held the baton from striking her and grabbed on to something on his uniform and just pulled quickly—he tumbled down the stairs(no strength was used just quickess and leverage)-

Time it seemed slowed down to a standstill-i still remember it today as it was yesterday—he looked into my eyes and i looked into his—what i saw was like a scared animal—i immediately screamed -nobody touch him—somehow everyone listened-i think they were just as in shock—he returned to the riot cop lines but in the back—i disappeared into the crowd. I venture to say i don’t think that cop hit anyone else that day.
I told this true story, because i want to say i believe in the Absolute Truth of Non-Violence but i also believe in the Absolute Truth, the inalienable, inherent, and Natural right to Self-Defence.

Now in the last few days media and religious people have been asking the question– would Jesus the Nazereen be with the Occupy Movement?

Allow me to answer, Jesus the Nazereen was without a doubt a Decolonizer from an Occupied Land just as the Palestinians are.

He fought his puppet government King Herod by saying he was King.

He fought Rome by saying they have no authority over him.

And he fought the money-changers by being violent to them.

The Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Vancouver has abruptly terminated a charitable service legendary for long, daily lineups in the heart of the Downtown Eastside.

A small, aging order of nuns ran the popular food and clothing service since 1926 in a mission facing Oppenheimer Park. The Franciscan Sisters of the Atonement sold the historic building to the archdiocese last year after determining the order no longer had the resources to carry on.

The archdiocese announced the departure of the New York-based Franciscan Sisters in a news release last May but signalled the archdiocese would find a way to continue the services provided by the order.

“The Sisters provide food and clothing in the heart of the Downtown Eastside, serving more than 500 people a day at 385 East Cordova St.,” said the May archdiocese news release. “The archdiocese will ensure that the services currently provided by the Sisters will continue.”

Vancouver news reports subsequently focused on the heroic, enduring service of the Franciscans, rather than the end of a vital food service, noting the archdiocese commitment to find a way to continue the service. CBC news ran a story noting that the archdiocese had indicated another order of nuns moving into the mission, the Missionaries’ of Charity, would continue the work of the departing Franciscans.

But a former mission advisory board member, who asked to remain anonymous, says the closure plan has been in the works for months. He said the clothing service stopped months ago and the crews of women making sandwiches for the mission were told their services were no longer needed weeks ago. No mention was made of a recall. The board advising the Franciscan Sisters was dismissed in April after being told that the service would be transferred to a new order of nuns.

Archdiocese director of communications Paul Schratz released a statement Aug. 18 noting that the May archdiocese news release has been misinterpreted.

“In the Archbishop’s May 8 letter, the archdiocese did not say exactly what would follow in the wake of the Sisters’ departure because neither we nor anyone else knew then or would make such an assumption. We said we would ensure the services provided by the Sisters are continued.”

Archdiocese administrator Rob Mascitti said the assumption that the Missionaries of Charity would carry on the work of the departing Franciscan order was wrong. He said the archdiocese is currently in talks with the new order but no determination has been made as to what kind of service they will provide in connection with the mission.

Schratz said the archdioceses focus after learning the Franciscan nuns were leaving has been on two key areas: “Making sure the transition doesn’t leave anyone unserved and honouring the Sisters for their tremendous service.”

City of Vancouver homeless advocate Judy Graves said she was appalled. “Of course it’s leaving people unserved,” she said in an Aug. 21 interview. “People don’t line up in wheel chairs and crutches for nothing.”

Graves said the loss of the service would have immediate impact since other food services are running at capacity. Graves, a former member of the city’s temporary Emergency Homeless Action Team, was unaware of the service closure…

Graves says the meals provided by the mission were of a higher food value than meals offered elsewhere to the hungry. She said the Franciscan Sisters’ standard was consistently high, a quality above anything offered elsewhere.

Staff at the community centre in Oppenheimer Park said the loss of the food service has left many homeless confused and worried, many still expecting the service to continue. A steady stream of men continued to peer into the closed door of the mission last week. There is no sign on the door indicating a closure or directing the hungry to another service…

Staff at the Resource and Lifeskills Centre near the Mission who provided identification for some 20 to 30 homeless residents referred to them daily by the Franciscan Sisters’ free clothing service say they are swamped with folks asking about the loss of the food service.

A volunteer who worked for six years for the Sister’s free clothing service says he was repeatedly told no other agency in the area offered free clothing. And he said the service was critical since residences in the area often have no secure lock up areas for valuables and men would arrive at the Mission without shoes or shirts on a regular basis.

Schratz said the Archdiocese has been monitoring food services in the area and finds that the mission closure has not led to an overflow at other services.

‘We’re now in dialogue with all the downtown charities, government agencies and other potential partners to see what exactly is the best way for the Church to foster better relationships and build more fellowship in this neighbourhood.”

Archdiocese officials refused to comment on speculation the closure of the mission charitable services is tied to the pending sale of the John Paul II Pastoral Centre at 150 Robson St.

Franciscan Sisters of Atonement leaving Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside

The Franciscan Sisters of Atonement, who have long handed out food and clothing to Vancouver’s poor, will be leaving the city after 85 years.

The New York-based sisters have in recent years been serving roughly 500 people a day out of their building at 385 East Cordova in the Downtown Eastside.

The Vancouver Catholic archdiocese will find a way to continue the services of the aging Franciscan Sisters with “a new generation of workers,” said a news release Monday.

“Over the decades, the Sisters have offered language programs, kindergarten and daycare programs, a clinic, room and board, adult convert classes, hot meals and lunches, as well as clothing for men in special need, such as a suit for a court appearance, shoes for a job interview, or steel-toed boots for men trying to get construction work,” said the archdiocese’s statement.

“The Sisters have provided those in need not only food and clothing, but respect and responsibility, 365 days a year,” said Archbishop Michael Miller. “We owe it to the Sisters’ legacy, as well as to the people who live in the Downtown Eastside, to continue that service.”

The Missionaries of Charity, the religious order established by Mother Teresa of Calcutta, will move into the convent being vacated by the Sisters of the Atonement in order to have a downtown Vancouver presence.

The Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem (lat.: Ordo Equestris Sancti Sepulcri Hierosolymitani, OESSH) is a Roman Catholic order of knighthood under the protection of the pope. It traces its roots to Duke Godfrey of Bouillon, principal leader of the First Crusade.[1]

In 1496, Pope Alexander VIcreated the office of Grand Master of the Order, and the office vested in the papacy. The office of Grand Master remained vested in the papacy until 1949. Since then a cardinal has been grand master. The Pope is sovereign of the Order, and it enjoys the protection of the Holy See and has legal seat at Vatican City.[2]

Crusader period

Five major orders were formed in the Holy Land between the late 11th century and the early 12th century: the Knights of the Holy Sepulchre (circa 1099), Knights Templar (circa 1118), Knights Hospitaller (circa 1099) (St John), Knights of the Hospital of St Mary of Jerusalem (Teutonic Knights) and Knights of St Lazarus.

Templar knights who contracted leprosy were sent to the care of the Order of St Lazarus. These knights trained the brethren of St Lazarus in the military arts and were responsible for transforming the Order into a military one. William, Archbishop of Tyre, as well as other historians of the period, appeared unaware of the difference between the Orders of Saint Lazarus and Saint John, referring to them in their accounts simply as ‘Hospitallers’. The latter were, and still are, called Hospitallers as they began as an Order of monks running the Hospital of St. John in Jerusalem shortly after the First Crusade.

They had become militarised by the 1130s, and went on, with the Knights Templar, to become one of the two largest and most influential Military Orders. Indeed, Godfrey de Bouillon – the uncrowned ‘king’ of Jerusalem – was so impressed with the dedication of these hospital workers under its leader Gerard and with their work toward the sick and the wounded that ‘king’ Godfrey de Bouillon supported and gave them funds and facilities.

Pilgrimages to the Holy Land were a common if dangerous practice from shortly after the crucifixion of Jesus to throughout the Middle Ages. Numerous detailed commentaries have survived as evidence of this early Christian devotional. While there were many places the pious visited during their travels, the one most cherished was the Church of the Holy Sepulchre, first constructed by Constantine the Great in the fourth century AD. It is said that a local tradition, begun long before the Crusades, provided for the bestowing of knighthood upon worthy men by the custodians of the Church of the Holy Sepulchre.

Following the capture of Jerusalem at the end of the First Crusade in 1099, the Order was first formally constituted as an Order of Canons, the successor of which is the modern Equestrian Order of the Holy Sepulchre of Jerusalem. It is considered among the oldest of the military orders of knighthood. It was recognized by Papal Bull in 1113.

End of Crusader period

The ultimate fall of the Kingdom of Jerusalem to the Muslims in 1291 did not suspend pilgrimages to the Tomb of Christ, or the custom of receiving knighthood there, and when the custody of the Holy Land was entrusted to the Franciscan Order, they continued this pious custom and gave the order its first Grand Master after the death of the last King of Jerusalem.

In 1489, Pope Innocent VIII suppressed the Order and ruled that it was to be merged with the Knights Hospitaller. In 1496, Pope Alexander VI, restored the Order of Holy Sepulchre to independent status. Alexander VI decreed that the Order would no longer be governed by the office of custodian and further decreed that the senior post of the Order would henceforth be raised to the rank of Grand Master, reserving this title for himself and his successors.[4]

Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem

Pius IX re-established the Latin Patriarchate of Jerusalem in 1847 and re-organized the Order. Pius X ordained that the Order’s cape or mantle, as worn by the original knights, be a “white cloak with the cross of Jerusalem in red enamel.” Pius Xassumed the title of Grand Master.

The title of Grand Master is now held by a cardinal of the Roman Curia who is resident in Rome at the Palazzo della Rovere, the 15th century palace of Pope Julius II, immediately adjacent to the Vatican. It serves as the Order’s international headquarters.

There are several grades of knighthood, and except for the highest grade, these are open to both men and women:

In ecclesiastical heraldry, the Order of the Holy Sepulchre is one of only two Orders whose insignia may be displayed in a clerical coat of arms. Knights and Ladies of the Order display their arms in the badge of the order, while Knights and Ladies of the rank Grand Cross surround their shield with a ribbon.

Other ranks place the appropriate ribbon below the shield and may also display the red Jerusalem cross behind their shield. In the territory of the Patriarchate of Jerusalem, reinstituted in 1847, the Franciscans have 24 convents, and 15 parishes.[5]

The Order- Its principal mission is to reinforce the practice of Christian life by its members, in absolute fidelity to the Popes; to sustain and assist the religious, spiritual, charitable and social works of the Catholic Church in the Holy Land; and to conserve and propagate the faith in the Holy Land and the rights of the Catholic Church there.

At the head of the Latin Kingdom of Jerusalem was placed Godfrey of Bouillon, the most valiant and devoted of the crusader knights of the Knights Templar order. Godfrey of Bouillon refused the title and vestments of royalty, declaring that he would never wear a crown of gold in the city where his Lord and Master had worn a crown of thorns. The only title Godfrey of Bouillon would accept was that of “Defender of the Holy Sepulchre.”

The Red Cross of Constantine, or more formally the Masonic and Military Order of the Red Cross of Constantine and the Appendant Orders of the Holy Sepulchre and of St John the Evangelist is a Christian Order of Freemasonry. Candidates for the Order must already be members of Craft Freemasonry (lodge) and Royal Arch Freemasonry (chapter); they must also be members of the Christian religion, and ready to proclaim their belief in the Christian doctrine of theHoly Trinity.[1]

The Masonic and Military Order of the Red Cross of Constantine is a three-degree Order of masonry, and with its “Appendant Orders” a total of five degrees are conferred within this system. Installation as a “Knight of the Red Cross of Constantine” is admission to the Order’s first degree. There are two more degrees which follow, and also the two other distinct Orders of Masonry (both Christian in character) which are under the control of each national (or regional) Grand Imperial Conclave of the Order.

The Order of the Holy Sepulchre

The Masonic Order should not be confused with the identically named Order of the Holy Sepulchre within the Roman Catholic Church. Although both Orders recall the same historical events.. The Masonic Order of the Holy Sepulchre has a long and complex ritual of symbolic meaning, based upon the legend of knights guarding the supposed place of burial of Jesus Christ. Both the Masonic and ecclesiastical Orders take the Jerusalem Cross as their symbol, but whereas the ecclesiastical Order displays this cross in red on a white shield,[3] the Masonic Order displays the cross within a circle set at the centre of a Cross potent; on the jewel (medal) of the Order, this badge is further enclosed within a black and gold lozenge.[4]A meeting of the Order of the Holy Sepulchre takes place in a ‘Sanctuary’,[5] and the presiding officer is called the ‘Prelate’.

The origins of the Order of the Holy Sepulcher have been disputed for centuries. In this examination of the history of what is today a major Catholic Order of Knighthood, under the direct protection of the Holy See, it has been my intention to separate fact from fantasy and outline the historical development of this great institution. It now has a world-wide mission to support the Holy Places, particularly in Jerusalem, and has approximately eighteen thousand members across the globe. [1]

Some sixteenth, seventeenth and eighteenth century historians claimed that the Order was founded a few years after the death of Christ, a statement unsupported by any documentary evidence and which may be dismissed as mythology. Fantastic theories, such as the Order’s foundation by the Apostle Saint James, or Saint Helena, the mother of the Emperor Constantine, should be given no more credence than the Japanese tradition that their Emperor is descended from the Sun God.

A set of Statutes, the Statuta et leges ordinis equ. SSmi Sepulchri Dominici., apparently dated 1 January 1099 but containing references to French Kings not born until two hundred years later, were copied and published by Jacques de Villamont in 1613, but these were invented to add greater luster to its history. [2] The authenticity of these statutes was challenged soon after Villamont’s work was published and there is no surviving Papal Bull confirming or approving them; there is little doubt that they were of much later date and designed to support the legitimacy of the Order’s claim to an independent foundation.

Several historians of the Order have attributed the actual foundation of the Order to Godefroy, Duke of Bouillon, first Christian King of Jerusalem, after the liberation of Jerusalem in 1099. It may indeed have been possible and appropriate that some kind of “honor guard” for the Holy Sepulcher could have been established at that time, but there is no contemporary evidence of any kind to support this claim.

Certainly a religious Order of Canons of the Holy Sepulcher under the Rule of Saint Augustine was founded early in the twelfth century, and this Order soon established itself across Europe and acquired great wealth.

There are no contemporary documentary sources, however, which demonstrate that these Canons assumed a military function or that a group of military brothers dedicated specifically to the protection of the Holy Sepulcher was associated with them.

France and The Holy Sepulcher Knights

In France resistance to Papal authority enabled institutions such as knights of Saint Lazarus and the Holy Sepulcher Canons, who properly owed total obedience to the Holy See, to refuse Papal ordinances and maintain unregulated organizations. [27] The Order of Saint John did manage to absorb several of the Canons’ properties there but, by the early sixteenth century, there were a number of knights of the Holy Sepulcher who claimed to be part of an Order of Chivalry purportedly founded by Godefroy of Bouillon and associated with that of the Canons. The French Crown was eventually persuaded to support the claims of the Hospitallers, and Henri III confirmed the absorption of the Canons at the request of the Grand Master of Saint John, by Letter Patent of November 1574.

With the King of France given the special privilege in 1511, negotiated with the Ottoman Sultan, of protecting the Holy Places, the proportion of knights of French birth grew in relation to other nationalities. Between 1500 and 1560 the French composed nineteen per cent of the total, but between 1597 and 1739 they made up fifty per cent rising to fifty-one in years between 1815 and 1848.

Templar Origin of Freemasonry

I’m going to retell (adapt) an ancient story from time immemorial of the Indigenous Peoples of the land of the Condor – South America. It was originally about a little hummingbird that tried to put out the great fire that threatened all the animals and other beings in their forest home. It was most recently publicly retold by Michael Yahgulanaas (Haida Gwaii) and Wangari Maathei, Nobel Peace Prize winner from Kenya.

Yahgulanaas usually writes about the trickster Raven.

But first, yes i have to get my big butt in here first. I was at our Town Hall meeting this past Saturday and i was appalled to hear what the Rev. Ric Matthews had to say(pertaining to the issue of the safety and sexual assaults on women at First United Church. I publicly addressed him and called him out on what he had to say. Indeed, women on the front lines did a far better job, of dressing him down, trying to gain redress to this most vital issue to women and our community.

I want to say that women are the center of this community. We just don’t acknowledge it, in every way.

Not only are women the centre, they are our best and bravest warriors. I have seen it time and time over again. The women have been let down by the men, who are mostly pulling up the rear. There is a strong circle of men and trans but that must expand greatly-if we are to survive, as a community. We are not supporting and defending women nearly enough And the women who have been our greatest warriors of all are our “poor”Aboriginal women, who have been the most brutalized, marginalized and ignored.

I have had a vision again, so it is to this, that i propose we DECLEAR the 100 Block E Hastings a SACRED site for our unique culture and community. And that the PANTAGES SITE BE DEDICATED TO OUR MURDERED AND MISSING WOMEN, including Ashley Machiskinic and Harriet Nahanee. Furthermore the 100% social housing site should be RESERVED for our, HOMELESS and LOW-INCOME ABORIGINAL WOMEN and their FAMILIES.: And that is the Heart and Soul of our community.

As a community, we will never have healing until our women, especially our Aboriginal women have healing and homes. They, will help guide us to the way of healing and to be fully human -i guarantee it. And one day we men and children and all beings will join them in the centre.

But for now the DTES community faces it’s Darkest hour. Should they build condos at the Pantages-the community implodes. I give you my word because, we go together like Salmon and a Stream, that they will never be allowed to build condos at the Pantages site. But for that to happen we have to greatly widen the band of male, female and trans warriors. And we must never let our guards down or acccept Trojan horses.

The Pantages is scripted for us, it is theatre writ large.

Our Oppressors are counting on us being, ‘”too sick, depressed and oppressed” to fight this fight, but every dog has his day and even a sick dog can unexpectedly jump up and bite you. And i can tell you, it is not the size of the dog that wins the fight but the size of the fight in the dog, that wins the fight.

Every oppressor has their, Little Big Horn, Fish Lake(Tenzin Biny), culture and environment destroying Enbridge and XL pipelines. This is also the hour of our making- This is our Harper’s Ferry, our Zion, our Alamo, our Gettysburg’s, our 4^th Servile War. And it is in the crucible of battle that character is forged ( some call this the Journey of Life).

I tell you, Heaven and Hell will be torn asunder before we let this community of Dreamers be destroyed. And i will give my life if need be. Men, Women and Trans, We must bind together all our strings of consciousness, that way we can never be broken or defeated. (Unity of Purpose)

And it is to that point that i will retell the true story of the Great Warrior:

The Little Hummingbird Warrior of the Time Before the DTES

Long ago, in the time before time, some call it dreamtime, in this exact area, where the DTES exists, was a land of mists and forests and forest beings of every kind and stripe, great and small.

This is the story of the Great Fire , that threatened their beloved community and home.

All the animal beings, great and small, panicked , scurried and fluttered out of the forest.

No fire had ever raged so mightily.

All the animal beings, great and small, huddled at the edge of their beloved forest home and watched

in disbelief and shock. All except for One.

Little Hummingbird, she did not abandon their beloved home, but she courageously flew with fleetness and determination, to a stream, to pick up a single droplet of water, in her beak. She flew back and forth, tirelessly every time, dropping a single droplet, on the raging fire.

The other animal beings, watched in horror.

Finally, Wolf said to little hummingbird, “the fire is far to hot, it would be useless for me to try and help.”

Rabbit said, “ I am shaking in my skin, there’s nothing i can do.“

Hawk said, “my wings will be singed by fire, and i will be useless if not dead”

Finally, Great Bear said, “little hummingbird, are you crazy, what are you doing?”

And Little Hummingbird looked at all the other animal beings and she said, “ I am doing everything i can”.

(Some quick facts about Hummingbird: Identified with the symbol for eternity, because it’s wings make that pattern in symbol. She is also known as the messenger and stopper of time. Hummingbirds can not live without flowers, and many flowers can not live without her. She symbolizes courage and is the smallest of birds. She is known to fend off the eagle if her nest is threatened.

She also symbolizes, death and rebirth. In South America(high in the Andes Mountains), she is thought to die on cold nights, only to ReAwaken with the Sunrise. Some say she is the Sun come in disguise.

Hummingbird, quickly dies if caged, caught or imprisoned. )

SEQUEL 138 WELCOMES VISITORS AT DEMONSTRATION
“We expect up to 400 visitors tomorrow at our Tinsletown, International Village
office,” said Sequel 138 owner Marc Williams, referring to the demonstration
organized by Wendy Pederson and Jean Swanson.
“These good people are interested in our new project on the site of the old
Pantages Theatre. We welcome them, one and all. Unfortunately, Wendy and
Jean are calling the event a ʻpicket partyʼ. This trivializes the issue,” Williams
said.
“Our project will offer 79 units of affordable, market entry housing for service
providers in the DTES. We will also offer 18 units of social housing. Additionally,
we are providing 2500 sq ft of art space. ALL OF THIS is being done within
existing bylaws.
“We are at or below all height and density requirements. We are asking for zero
waivers or variances. Sequel 138 is entirely within the rules set by the City.
“The idea of a ʻpicket partyʼ trivializes the urgent need for mixed and affordable
housing in the DTES. We are willing to invest private capital to help solve a public
problem. There will be zero displacement. Not one person lives onsite now. Only
rats.
“Even so, we welcome our visitors. If permitted, we will serve milk and cookies to all 400. We will also provide informational pamphlets, and invite people to add
their names to the housing and art space lists,” Williams said.
Referring to a previous, smaller demonstration, he added, “We also welcome the
return of the zombies. They occupy a special place at the Pantages. No
werewolves.”

Defending the DTES by any Legal and Moral means necessary, Part IV

Explosion or Implosion: the making of Peaceful Uprisings or Robertson’s Riots

(This article will be given to Mayor Gregor Robertson, city council, city manager Penny Ballen, Premier Christy Clark, Social Housing, Energy and Mines Minister Rich Coleman, Adrian Dix Police Chief Jim Chu, pm Stephen Harper Jack Layton, Bob Rae and Elizabeth May)

I’ve had visions concerning our unique culture – community and land. We are in a pivotal juncture in our history and existence; we face imminent threats locally, provincially and federally. I’ve been the first to publicly urge extreme caution with the local area plan (LAP). At Council and on these pages. The (LAP) is a government process to find out our development vision for the community. It is however weighted heavily on the developers, business and government interests side. It is to be written not by us but by government bureaucrats. It is non-enforceable, and therefore has no teeth. Our viewpoints are only recommendations.

It also imposes on us, the will of people from rich neighbourhoods- the Building community Society and Penny Ballem, the city manager – also the highest paid city employee. Trustworthy characters to be sure. How trustworthy? Not that long ago, a beloved member of our community at our Town Hall meeting also urged extreme caution with the LAP and also saying “we should have ten of us for every one of them on the LAP committee. Another beloved member of the community said, “At least.”

Mayor Gregor Robertson showed his disdain for our community and is the first imminent threat to our community by disregarding our viewpoints and recommendations concerning the Chinatown Heights Review (allowing condos to be built over our objections even before a LAP is completed and effectively taking Chinatown out of the DTES or making Chinatown the “Rabbit” a “lap”ahead of us perhaps a test run for condo development in the rest of the DTES. Robertson showed no interest what soever in the majority low-income residents of Chinatown.

The second imminent threat we face comes from the Christy Clark provincial government. In her very short tenure of leader of the BC government, she has shown consistency in her disdain for the DTES and vulnerable people. One, by not allowing extended funding for the H.E.A.T. Shelters, and two – following that up with heaping even more disdain and disrespect for our community and our women by not allowing funding to resident Aboriginal and Women’s groups in the DTES for the Missing and Murdered Women’s Inquiry.

The third imminent threat comes from the hostile Federal government led by Stephen Harper. His hatred for the DTES borders on what can only be described as Hitlerian. The evidence is his irrational and maniacal persecution of Insite at the Supreme Court of Canada – a verdict due within months. I have said before, we are a unique culture of Survivors and Resisters to all forms of exploitation and abuse. Harriet Nahanee would tell you, it is worth fighting for, it is worth defending and it is worth dying for.

When we bundle together our arrows, our flowers, our rainbows and our dreams—we cannot be broken. Yes, they have chopped out of the body of the DTES Chinatown and they intend to chop up the rest of the body of the DTES but they need our signature and our hand to put the final nail into our coffin. But this community was born on the streets and in the end-we will fight for it in the streets.

In the fall of last year, Police Chief Jim Chu came for a town hall meeting at their calling in the DTES.

I told Police Chief Chu to his face, to not bring their Barnum and Bailey Circus here as an exercise in public relations but lacking in any substance. And that if he really wanted to begin gaining the trust of the community, he could begin by stop ticketing our vendors.

So starting July 4, I will be selling the freshest Vegetables mostly organic, at cost or below cost(no one will be turned away) at the corner of Main and Hastings, at times at the Pantages theatre and across from the Pantages by Insite and Insite Garden and the Sunday Street market fair at Carrell st. I am also asking gardeners if they can donate vegetables, fruit not as in a charitable way but as a right, equitable and just thing (1homelessdave@gmail.com).

All of us deserve socially affordable housing and low cost, best quality nutritious food, especially those in ill health and the most vulnerable (Zero barrier access). My vegetable outlay will be called , homeless dave’s Happy Block or even better Happy Planet Imaginarium Renewable Garden. I will document on these pages, elsewhere and orally everything that happens to me.

And to be clear, I told Mayor Gregor Robertson to his face at the City Hall hearings on the Chinatown Heights Review, if he overrules the will of the People and sides with the developers and business interests-I would call for Radical Non-Violence, Uncivil Disobedience, and Zero tolerance for Economic Violence.

Vancouver, epicentre. Was it a coincidence this place saw the greatest jingoism in national history during that Olympic thingy, and then one of the sickest riots when the home hockey team choked? Vancouver has a bad tude these days, and insanely high real estate valuations have turned it into the house porn capital of the country. With the SFH average over $1 million and areas like the west side now utterly unaffordable to anyone not in the top 1% of the income scale, Vancouver is set to fall, and fall hard.

…Richmond B.C., of course. This desperately flat suburban mess south of YVR is so disadvantaged it has only 11 Starbucks. For most of the past year this was HAM central, ground zero for BC’s bubble, and the reputed destination of endless bales of Chinese cash. In January alone home sales jumped by a quarter and prices rose 43%. The average price hit $1,021,500 and perfectly ugly houses were bulldozed for immensely ugly ones.

Paul Krugman sounded the war cry this Sunday on Fareed Zakaria’s program Global Public Square. After all, he asserted, only spending equivalent to another World War could lead us back to prosperity. That, and a healthy dose of inflation.

Krugman argued that inflation would address our debt problem by reducing our bill in current dollar terms and that the Second World War was a giant stimulus plan that actually worked. Thankfully, he added the refrain, “Hopefully we don’t need a world war to get there”..

Quantum super-computing sees microwave breakthrough

PARIS — Physicists in the United States on Wednesday notched up a lab success in the quest for quantum computers, whose stellar capacities have already earned them the nickname of “super-computers on steroids.”

Atoms can be excited to a quantum condition using microwaves, an advance over larger and bulkier lasers, until now the only way to achieve this essential state, they said.

In theory, it means that quantum computers — if they are commercially feasible — could be as tiny as a small book, the team reported in Nature, the British science journal.

“It is conceivable a modest-sized quantum computer could eventually look like a smart phone combined with a laser pointer-like device,” said Dietrich Leibfried of the US National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).

“Sophisticated machines might have an overall footprint comparable to a regular desktop PC.”

 The idea behind quantum computing is to exploit a weird discovery of particle physics.

When two particles interact, they become “entangled,” which means one particle affects the other. The connection lasts long after they are separated.

In “entanglement,” particles also go into state called superposition.

Today’s computers use a binary code, in which data is stored in a bit that could be either zero or 1.

 But in superposition, a quantum bit, known as a qubit, could be either zero or one, or both zero and one at the same time.

This potentially offers a massive increase in data storage, greatly helping number-crunching tasks such as running climate-change models and breaking encrypted codes.

In the new experiments, NIST physicists held two electrically-charged atoms, also called ions, of magnesium in a “trap” of electro-magnetic fields.

The ions hovered just above a chip consisting of gold electrodes, some of which were activated to create targeted pulses of microwave energy in the one to two gigahertz range.

The microwaves produced minute magnetic fields to manipulate the spin of the ions so that they reached entanglement.

Vision Vancouver City Council votes to gentrify, sanitize and make more homeless in Chinatown and the Downtown Eastside: Mayor Robertson joins forces in agreement with right wing NPA Councillor Susan Anton

 VANCOUVER – Today Vancouver City Council approved the plan to increase building heights in the Chinatown sub-district of the Downtown Eastside (DTES). The “Historic Area Heights Review” (HAHR) plan increases overall building heights in all of Chinatown except Pender Street to 9 stories, without application, and to 15 stories on the Main Street corridor and 12 stories in the rest of the area by application.

 One hundred and sixty-seven people spoke at 5 public hearings about the HAHR. The great majority of these speakers were low-income residents of Chinatown and the DTES and supporters of the low-income community, all who whom spoke out against the plan.

 Explaining why he opposed the motion to increase heights in Chinatown, Councillor David Cadman said that he heard Chinatown business leaders point to gentrification pressures coming into the DTES from the West. He said that the council decision to encourage and subsidize condo development in Chinatown will mount similar real estate market pressures from the south and will drive real estate speculation in the poorest community in the country.  Fraser Stuart, a DTES resident and member of the Downtown Eastside Neighbourhood Council (DNC) board of directors agreed. After sitting in on all five public hearings and the final council meeting Stuart said, “I feel like I live on a chessboard and the city and the developers are playing together to take over my home.”

 Mayor Gregor Robertson explained why he supported the motion to increase heights, “Saying no to the Chinatown neighbourhood who has brought this forward will only increase divisions in the DTES.”  Ivan Drury, a DNC board member and DTES resident who lives on the eastern border of Chinatown wondered if Robertson had been at the same hearings he had. Drury said, “I was at all the five public hearings and I did not hear even one Chinatown resident speak in favour of the heights increase.  City staff started the hearing process saying that heights were unanimously supported by “Chinatown” and today they made their decision to exclude the low-income residents of Chinatown from that community.”

 Wendy Pedersen, also a resident of the DTES and board member of the DNC said that the heights increase will negatively affect the whole DTES, “Vision councilors voted to gentrify the Downtown Eastside.  Council just foisted 12 to 15 story towers on us and this will cause bad ripple effects like property value increases, rent increases, more yuppie stores.  The end result is poor people get pushed out.”

 Homeless Dave, a DTES resident who, on the first night of public hearings threatened that more gentrification would create a “little Tunisia” in the streets of the DTES. After the decision to increase heights in Chinatown he said, “City council has finished the easy part, they passed a zoning change in City Hall. The hard part is yet to come. What developer will dare be the first to come down and fight the low-income community in our neighbourhood?”

…This suggests that Insite might be particularly important to the welfare of women and aboriginals, two groups that are especially vulnerable to drug-related problems.

But, of course, all drug users are vulnerable, and not just to the drugs themselves. They are vulnerable as well to the whims of unscrupulous politicians who would remove from them a lifesaving medical service.

So, on May 12, the federal government, a two-time loser in court on this issue, will try to prove to the Supreme Court of Canada that it is justified in shutting Insite down -that it is justified in denying vulnerable people a service that could save their lives. And in so doing, it will prove only its own moral and intellectual bankruptcy.

It’s time to inject some Insite into this (Federal campaign)

CASINO-GATE: Stopping the DTES-Chinatown Neighbourhood 5 Towers

There is an extreme predator in our midst in the DTES, the likes and scale of which we have never seen. It has lurked and preyed for a long time, but now it is looking for the final kill, its true identity finally becoming apparent. It is Billionaire Predatory and Casino Capitalism.
The 5 Condo-Gentrification Towers, they want to build, has nothing to do with the revitalization of DTES-Chinatown or as the original poor Chinese immigrants called it, Salt Water City (Hum Sui Fow). But it does have everything to do with the proposed MegaCasino “entertainment complex” at north False Creek downtown.

A major partner in this MegaCasino complex is multi-billionaire Terry Hui and his Concord Pacific corp. Paragon Gaming (and Paragon Development; see also Paragon Capital as a financier of Worthington Properties and the Van Maren Group) is another major partner (much more to come on them). The Insurance Corporation of British Columbia(ICBC), Chairman T. Richard Turner has a long-standing relationship with Paragon Gaming

T. Richard Turner is major Gordon Campbell Provincial Liberal Party donor and fundraiser. T. Richard was also a governor of the World Economic Forum(DAVOS). He was also a past Chair of the British Columbia Lottery Corporation, as well as being on the organizing Committee for the 2010 Olympics. He is involved with the Las Vegas based Paragon Gaming( he’s on their board of directors for Casino-GATE) in overseeing the MagaCasino complex.

The 5 gentrification Towers are primarily geared as feeder for the Casino-GATE complex. How? Recently China’s Authorities approved Canada as an officially approved tourist destination. Canadian tourist agencies and government statistics are expecting over 22% increase in tourism to Canada, higher in BC. ( See also China’s much bigger then Las Vegas. Macau gambling mecca).

Now, Vancouver’s City Council and Mayor Gregor Robertson’s “Emergency” Resolution to chop Chinatown out of the body of the DTES makes sense: Casino-GATE.

Councillor Raymond Louie has talked about arriving at City Hall in 1994, when there were nasty, bitter debates about a Maga-Casino Complex near Gastown. At that time it was to cost $750 million and pushed by guess who–? Premier Mike Harcourt (see also Bingo-GATE) of course. The people won at that time.

The Vancouver Police Department has gone on record saying the Mega-Casino complex will not bring Organized Crime Syndicates. The VDP, needs to be probed. More to come Part 3

Building Communities Society: Billionaire Barbarians at our gates (DTES)

On Feb. 5. 11, at the DTES Neighbourhood Council meeting, Wendy Pedersen of (DNC) asked me if I would write in the Carnegie Newsletter my concerns to do with the Building Communities Society (BCS) who are tasked by City council to be our co-chairs and partners in the DTES local area plan (the planning future of our community).

Here’s Milton Wong (quote from the Vancouver Sun) the founder, billionaire-type, driving force and honorary chairman of the BCS. “It takes vision to go into one of the most deplorable areas and go hey, we should send our institution down there because it’s the best way of revitalizing the Downtown East Side (he’s referring to SFU-Woodwards complex).

Milton Wong is a billionaire-type who is the former Simon Fraser University chancellor and a key person in the development of the Woodwards complex. Milton Wong, was the chair of the fundraising campaign for the GoldCorp, SFU School for Contemporary Arts at Woodwards. He donated $3 million for the Milton Wong theatre, the “heart” of the GoldCorp centre for the Arts at Woodwards.

Milton Wong is also the chairman of HSBC Bank, Canada, Asset Management. HSBC is one of the world’s largest banks and also one of its most notorious, exploitive and greedy. HSBC is one of the major funders of the Alberta Tar Sands. Indigenous Peoples in Alberta and elsewhere have been campaigning against HSBC for a long time now.

Milton Wong is also on the board of directors of one of the world’s largest most notorious, exploitive , abusive, mining companies RioTinto Alcan. Here’s what Indigenous Rights Activists here in B.C. have

said referring to RioTintoAlcan’s Indigenous Peoples Policy:

Redwashing is a term to describe the deception of the general public by government and industry in trying to cover up their theft of indigenous peoples lands, natural resources and cultural riches by pretending that they are acting in the best interests of the native peoples. The term is coined in analogy to greenwashing. Like in the case of greenwash, redwash occurs when time and money are spent on public relations gimmicks that make a pretence of acting ethically towards the indigenous nations of the New World, when in fact the opposite is done.

RioTintoAlcan has also royally screwed the Carrier-Sekani Tribal Council (B.C. First Nation) all the up to the Supreme Court of Canada (Oct, 2010), denying the Carrier-Sekani there land rights and their duty to consult First Nations.

Milton Wong’s billionaire-type buddy, Brandt Louie, was also a driving force behind the Woodwards gentrification complex. Louie is the chancellor of SFU. He is also the chairman of the board of London Drugs, a profitable corporation that is subsidized by public tax dollars to be in the Woodwards gentrification complex.

He also serves on the board of directors of the Royal Bank Canada (Canada’s largest bank), Canfor, and the World Economic Forum (DAVOS).

Completing the triumvirate of billionaire Rule in the DTES is Milton Wong’s other buddy, Jimmy Pattison. Pattison of course is one of the world’s richest and greediest men. He owns a third of the shares of Canfor. He’s on the board of directors of the TD bank and BCE Canada’s largest telecommunications corporation and is a major developer in Vancouver etc. His upscale food store Nestors is located at the heart of the Woodwards gentrification complex in the Atrium with London Drugs. His store is subsidized by public tax dollars to be in the DTES.

We must remember, that to the billionaire-types, we are sitting on a pot of gold. They want to mine for that gold. The only reason the real estate (land) is cheap is because of us, the poor. They will do anything to get at the last remaining cheap real estate in downtown Vancouver. Employing, Good Cop-Bad Cop routine, Carrot or Stick, seduction, corruption, bribery, displacement or brute force.

Here’s the salesman, Chairman of the (BCS), Mike Harcourt in the Feb. 5 11 National Post:

He points to the Woodward’s block, a massive new development on the Downtown Eastside’s western fringe. Built with public and private funds, it offers a unique mix of social and market housing, retail space, government offices and a university campus.

“I think it’s a wonderful addition,” he says. “It’s had a great impact.”

On Jan 20, 2011 Mayor Gregor Robertson and his Vision-less council members created an abrupt “Emergency” resolution that begins the process of chopping up the body of the DTES, by removing a vital organ of the DTES, separating our poor in our Chinatown neighbourhood (Historic Area Heights Review).

But that’s not all. Mayor Robertson, also abused his power by Silencing our entire DTES community by not allowing  80 community members to speak to Council. Council members from left to right spoke in unison condemning this universally as draconian and undemocratic.

These actions come from Mayor Robertson, who in China last year infamously questioned how worthwhile democracy was and endorsed China’s undemocratic oppressive authoritarian leaders. He was later forced to apologize.

Mayor Robertson’s two pillars of his Vision team are the eradication of homelessness and making Vancouver the Greenest city on earth by 2020. The truth is Mayor Gregor is the “Prince Charming” of the Whole Foods, Happy Planet (he’s co-owner) greenwash corporate industry (the faux green movement).

The reality is our DTES is the greenest urban community in Canada. How? Per person we have the lowest carbon footprint in urban Canada. The vast majority of us do not own cars. Most of us do not  even own bikes or phones, we’re malnourished and confined to tiny spaces. We’re a non-consumerist culture, we recycle and reuse everything, we have a weekly community street fair that helps facilitate that.

A culture of sharing is what the poor do. And as a soul of the DTES Harriet Nahanee, defended the land, environment, women and the poor. We are a unique culture of survivors and resisters to all forms of exploitation and abuse. The spirit of Harriet Nahanee would tell you, that spirit of resistance goes all the way back to it’s Squamish roots.

It is imperative that the green movement (those opposed to fossil fuels and nuclear etc) lock arms with our community to oppose our destruction (e.g. by gentrification: building more elite market condos) and call for 100% affordable housing, until all our people are adequately housed and safe.  We are the urban community face of such a movement. One rooted in Justice, compassion, sensibility and a culture of sharing.

If Martin Luther King jr were alive today and was in Canada, he would without a doubt be locking arms with our community, because we are a community of Justice seekers.

The prime justice directive of all the world’s religions from Antioch Christianity to Zoroastrianism, is to not judge and oppress the poor but we should judge the greedy and the powerful and check their abuses and corruption.

All communities of Love, Compassion and Justice seekers should be locking arms with our community, for we are also a community of healers.

*As a beloved community member put it many times, our community lost it’s virginity over the Woodward’s condo complex process. Presently with Mike Harcourt’s Building Communities Society and the local area plan, we face the Woodward’s process to the 10th power. We need to move very slowly and deliberately. We should not be forced to do anything we don’t want to or we might just find out that our partner, ate Grandma and has very big teeth and ears. More in Part 2

New mega casino will be a mega headache

Re: Casino development promoters stress economic benefits for city, Feb. 11

Vancouver has been working hard to be a green and compassionate city; adding a mega Las Vegas-styled casino to BC Place is not in keeping with this image.

Despite Paragon president Scott Menke’s assertion that “small businesses will benefit,” research shows destination casinos divert spending from local arts, sports, tourism and other businesses.

As for the casino’s being “safer than shopping malls,” FINTRAC (Financial Transactions Reports Analysis Centre of Canada) research shows casinos are the third-largest venues for money laundering in Canada.

BC Pavilion Corp. (PavCo) chair David Podmore cites a “very positive response” from the surrounding community to the new casino proposal; why, then, are the Strathcona and False Creek Residents Associations, the Grandview Area Council, Arts Advocacy BC and others officially against it?

This mega casino is a mega bad idea for Vancouver. I urge both citizens and council to just say no.

ATLANTIC CITY, N.J. — Faced with cutting its ties to an alleged organized-crime family in China or a selling its interest in an Atlantic City casino, MGM Resorts International is saying goodbye to New Jersey.

On Thursday, MGM closed a $73 million sale of its land under Atlantic City’s Borgata Hotel Casino & Spa to Vornado Realty Trust and Geyser Holdings.

MGM is selling its half ownership in the Borgata to an unidentified bidder for more than $250 million.

The company acted after an ultimatum from New Jersey casino regulators that it sell its stake in Atlantic City’s top casino or cut ties with Pansy Ho, its partner in a casino in the Chinese enclave of Macau.

Ho’s father, Stanley Ho, has long been accused of ties to Chinese organized crime, which he denies. MGM chose to keep its relationship with Ho and walk away from the Borgata.

Considered the father of modern gambling in China, Stanley Ho lets criminal gangs “operate and thrive” inside his casinos, the New Jersey Division of Gaming Enforcement said in a report issued to the casino in May 2009 and made public last March. The division found that Pansy Ho, his daughter, is dependent on him and his money and remains under his influence.

The regulators concluded that Pansy Ho is an “unsuitable” business partner of MGM in Macau.

The company admits no wrongdoing and says it has a “spotless record” operating the MGM Grand Macau with Pansy Ho.

There were two big names involved in Reuter’s probe into Sands Macau.

Reuters Enterprise Editor Jim Impoco, the former Sunday Business editor of the New York Times, and PBS producer and Berkeley professor Lowell Bergman, whose investigation into the tobacco industry ended up on-screen in The Insider.

The story involves threats of limb-breaking, murder, previously undisclosed court documents and potential violations of American gaming laws by Las Vegas Sands.

Another exciting aspect: cross-media cooperation. As written in the piece, it’s “is a collaboration with the Investigative Reporting Program at University of California, Berkeley.”

It’s an industry move that everyone from Bill Keller to HuffPo has touted, and the new non-profits like ProPublica (which had a hand in a NYTimes Magazine cover story last year),

At first, the men had been ordered to break the arms and legs of a dealer at Sands Macau suspected of helping a patron cheat millions of dollars from the business. Later, a call went out to murder the dealer, court records show. But then one of the gangsters balked and reported the plans to authorities.

The plot’s mastermind, according to testimony in previously undisclosed court transcripts obtained by Reuters, was Cheung Chi-tai. At trial a witness identified Cheung as a leader of the Wo Hop To — one of the organized crime groups in the region known as triads. Another witness, a senior inspector with the Hong Kong police called to testify because he is an expert on the triads, identified Cheung by name as someone who would commit crimes for money. Cheung’s organized crime affiliation was corroborated in interviews for this article with law enforcement and security officials intimately familiar with the gaming industry in Macau.

The murder-for-hire case sheds light on the links between China’s secretive triad societies and Macau’s booming gambling industry. It also raises potentially troubling questions about one of the world’s largest gaming companies, Las Vegas Sands, which plans to open a $5.5 billion Singapore casino resort in late April.

Cheung was not just named as a triad member but also, according to a regular casino patron testifying in the trial, “the person in charge” of one of the VIP rooms at the Sands Macau, the first of three casinos run here by Las Vegas Sands.

Sarno, is the character Robert De Niro plays in the movie Casino. Sarno was always believed to be Mob(by the FBI) and a early pioneer of Las vegas and the “owner” of Circus-circus (passed on to Bennett). Tony the ant had a “little shop” in there- Circus-circus.

Diana Bennett is chief executive officer of Paragon Gaming, a Las Vegas-based developer and operator of gaming properties. As an executive of Circus Circus Enterprises‘ leadership team, Bennett opened and operated gaming operations at multiple landmark properties, including the Luxor and Excalibur. She led the merger of the executive staffs of the Edgewater Hotel and Casino and the Colorado Belle Hotel and Casino. She also directed the purchase, takeover, and integration of new management into one of the timeless icons of the Las Vegas Strip, the Sahara Hotel and Casino, acquired by Gordon Gaming in 1995. Bennett has been personally responsible for management of multiple casino operations, and has been licensed in 45 jurisdictions.(According to her own Bio)

OTTAWA — The Treasury Board of Canada confirmed Wednesday night that the department had suffered “an unauthorized attempt to access its networks,” after a CBC report said a cyber attack originating in China had compromised the emails of top-ranking government officials.

The attack, believed to have started more than a month ago, forced both the Treasury Board and Finance Department to limit employee access to the Internet at both departments while investigators attempt to ascertain the breadth of the hackers’ intrusion.

Jay Denney, a spokesman for Treasury Board President Stockwell Day, said in an e-mail late Wednesday that “officials responsible for security have taken appropriate action in response to the threat.”

In its report, CBC termed the attack “unprecedented” in that hackers hijacked the “online identities” of top bureaucrats and then sent documents infected with a virus to employees throughout the departments. The hackers are believed to have accessed classified information.

British Columbia’s foresters have made a long-awaited breakthrough in China by convincing the country on the merits of wood.

The effort has sent the value of B.C. lumber exports surging beyond expectations.

China is a bright spot in what remains a troubled industry. B.C. lumber sales to mainland China doubled in 2010 to $668-million, exceeding Japan for the first time. But Japan is still an extremely weak market while the United States – the traditional No. 1 market for B.C. wood – is mired in a housing recession.

The new foothold in China is the longer-term salve for British Columbia, which faces a seemingly permanently reduced market in Japan and an extended, and slow, recovery in the United States.
EnCana-PetroChina Deal Subject to Review

FEBRUARY 11, 2011

TORONTO–PetroChina Co.’s planned 5.4 billion Canadian-dollar ($5.42 billion) deal to acquire a 50% stake in EnCana Corp.’s Cutbank Ridge natural-gas reserves in Western Canada will be reviewed by Industry Canada, a federal ministry, to determine if the proposed transaction generates a net economic benefit for Canada.

“I can confirm that this transaction is subject to review under the Investment Canada Act,” Industry Canada Minister Tony Clement said in an emailed statement. The deal can’t proceed unless the government decides the transaction passes the Investment Canada Act’s net economic-benefit test.

PetroChina, an arm of China’s state-owned National Petroleum Co., plans to file its application soon, Mr. Clement said. PetroChina produces two-thirds of China’s oil and gas.

EnCana, one of North America’s biggest natural gas producers, expected the review given the transaction’s large size. However, the Calgary company isn’t concerned.

The Hells Angels are an international crime syndicate who try to cover up their vicious criminal history with their “massive propaganda machine,” says an American police officer who infiltrated the notorious biker gang.

And Jay (Bird) Dobyns said it is surprising that Hells Angels in B.C. have not been declared a criminal organization by the province’s courts, despite attempts by prosecutors to get that designation.

“Yes, it is surprising,” Dobyns said of the B.C. Angels court victories.

“These guys are a criminal franchise. They are an international crime syndicate. And if we are just going to go to them for the explanation of who they are, then you are going to get the whitewash. That’s what they do. CALGARY — The chief executive of Enbridge Inc. confirmed Thursday a major Chinese oil company is backing its controversial oil pipeline between Alberta and the West Coast.

Sinopec is among producers and refiners that have together matched Enbridge’s (TSX:ENB) $100 million early-stage investment in the Northern Gateway proposal, Pat Daniel told a CIBC investment conference in Whistler, B.C.

“That speaks to the level of commitment that they’ve got, in that they’re investing upfront,” he said.

Sinopec, one of many Asian players to invest in the oilsands over the past few years, is the only Northern Gateway backer to be publicly identified so far.

The $5.5-billion Northern Gateway proposal has been dogged by vehement opposition from First Nations communities along the route and near the coast, as well as from environmentalists.

Organised crime has always been a problem in Vladivostok and Russia’s far east, but the last few years have seen a dramatic increase in the number of Chinese Triad groups operating in the region.

Last year alone, an estimated US$200m was transferred from China to the Russian far east–mostly through the Chinese underground banking system (see box: underground banks)–and invested in casinos, hotels, restaurants, and hostess bars. Large amounts have also been invested in illegal logging and fishing deals, with timber and fish being smuggled to China, Japan and South Korea; costing the government millions of roubles every year in lost revenue.

North America’s much-touted nuclear revival is in jeopardy, but it is not environmental and safety concerns that are undermining it. The industry is finding it increasingly difficult to make the economic case in both Canada and the United States.

The enormous capital cost of building reactors is just one factor holding back the long-promised nuclear renaissance…

In announcing their proposed merger last week, two North Carolina-based utilities, Duke Energy(DUK-N17.920.120.67%) and Progress Energy(PGN-N44.730.210.47%) say the combined company would possess the added heft needed to finance three planned nuclear projects.

But financial strength alone is not enough. The companies are also looking for political and regulatory support to shift financial obligations onto customers and taxpayers to minimize risk in what Moody’s Investor Service Inc. has dubbed a “bet-the-farm” type of project.

That effort to offload financial risk to partners, customers and governments is the hallmark of the 21st-century nuclear industry…

But none of the major reactor vendors has received certification for their reactor designs from the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission. The NRC is reviewing new reactors being developed by Toshiba Corp.’sWestinghouse Electric Co.; GE Hitachi Corp., and France’s Areva Group.

The industry is pursuing a variety of strategies to overcome its financial challenges, even as it projects the need for more than 46 new nuclear plants by 2030 to meet U.S. power demand and Washington’s target for reducing greenhouse gases.

Given the unwillingness of Wall Street to finance reactor construction, the U.S. government is offering an $18.5-billion (U.S.) loan guarantee program for utilities who are first out the gate in building new reactors. U.S. President Barack Obama has called for an expansion of this support program.

Southern Nuclear Operating Co. Inc. has received promise of an $8-billion (U.S.) loan guarantee to build two Westinghouse AP1000 reactors at its Vogtle plant in Georgia. Two other companies, Scana(SCG-N41.840.340.82%) and NRG Energy(NRG-N20.240.010.05%) have applications pending for projects in South Carolina and South Texas, respectively.
But Duke and Progress are less worried about loan guarantees and more concerned about the ability to begin recouping costs on the projects long before any electricity is being generated, company spokesman David Scanzoni said.

Florida, George and South Carolina allow utilities to begin charging customers for development costs on nuclear projects, even before companies make a final commitment to build. North Carolina – whose residents would consume power from two of the three plants the companies are proposing – does not allow that early cost recovery.

Without such a policy, the utilities are unlikely to be able to proceed with the plants, Mr. Scanzoni said.

But critics argue the regulators are, in effect, transferring financial risks from the investor-owned companies to their customers by allowing early cost recovery with guaranteed rates of return.

“It is one of a slew of things that the nuclear industry has structured in the United States to shift risk off of their companies and their shareholders and onto the backs and the pocketbooks of ratepayers and taxpayers in the United States,” said Stephen Smith, executive director of the Southern Alliance for Clean Energy.

“They want to socialize the risk and maximize the profits of these companies.”

China announced via its state-run media yesterday that more nuclear power plants will be built during the nation’s next Five Year Plan, from 2011-2015. It’s not exactly new news, per se, as it’s been well known that China’s nuclear power sector has been expanding for some time in concert with the nation’s goal to generate 15% of its power by non-fossil energy by 2020. China has 13 nuclear reactors in operation today, and another 25 are under construction. By 2015, China’s investment in nuclear power production is set to reach $75 billion…

There are rumblings that the world could run out of uranium before the turn of the next century…

China’s break-neck pace has not, of course, been without its critics. In a vast country where corners have been known to get cut in construction and regulation, and all too often with fatal consequences, safety concerns loom large. And the last time that a nation tried to expand its nuclear sector so quickly, Three-Mile Island happened. Though no major incidents have been in the last 15 years…

France, while a world leader in nuclear energy uptake, is on thin ice when it comes to its future position in the nuclear reactor development market. With the ink still drying from three deals signed with China, Areva and France remain confident, despite the odds.

Deals in the pipeline

Details on the second deal regarding a used fuel treatment and recycling plant are less forthcoming though it is believed that the aim is to build a MOX facility in China in which surplus weapons grade nuclear material can be reprocessed into fuel for nuclear power reactors..

At present, China recycles virtually no fuel, but has been working on some semi-indigenous, semi-Russian recycling technology which has been slower to develop than expected. Even with Areva’s technology analysts believe any fuel treatment and recycling plant to still be a long way off.

Work on the CAST plant will start immediately. The plant will be located in Shanghai and is scheduled to start operations at the end of 2012.

MUMBAI — Pupils from 70 schools in the Indian state of Maharashtra have boycotted classes after teachers tried to persuade them to support plans for a local nuclear power station, media reported on Tuesday.

About 2,500 children in 20 villages in Jaitapur district refused to go to lessons in protest against a campaign that described nuclear power as “clean and green”, the Press Trust of India (PTI) said.

Jaitapur, in western India, is the proposed site of a 9,900-megawatt nuclear power station that has led to large-scale demonstrations by activists and local people opposed to the project on environmental grounds.

Last week, district officials visited schools and asked teachers to promote the project among pupils.

India signed an agreement to buy nuclear reactors for the Jaitapur station from France’s state-run nuclear group Areva during a visit by French President Nicolas Sarkozy in December.

Energy-hungry India is one of the world’s biggest markets for nuclear technology with ambitious plans to reach a nuclear power capacity of 63,000 megawatts by 2032, from the current level of 4,560 megawatts.

President Vladimir Putin has signed to double Russia’s nuclear energy by building 26 major new nuclear power plants. Also, Russia plans to export more than 60 nuclear plants in the next 20 years.

The Kremlin has ordered ambitious nuclear expansion plans to be rapidly implemented and this will include the construction of the world’s first floating nuclear power plant.

Although some critics of the scheme claim that some of the plants that are going to be built, will use uranium enriched to almost weapons-grade level will cause a proliferation risk, there seems to be no stopping the Kremlin on this one.

This Russian nuclear giant, is going to be called Atomenergoprom (Atomic Energy Industry Complex), is similar to the other large conglomerates that the Putin administration has set up in sectors such as aircraft production, arms exports, electricity, and gas.

Gennady Pshakin, director of the independent Center for Non-Proliferation said that, “I hope Putin has taken steps to avoid a second Gazprom.”

Well in our humble opinion it looks as if Putin is trying to replicate Gazprom as best he can. By creating large state companies controlling vast amounts of resources the government has given themselves tremendous power, both domestically and perhaps more importantly in the international arena as well.

The online newspaper Gazeta.ru, said that 70 percent of Russians say they’re strongly against any atomic station in their own neighbourhood..

Currently, Russia is building more nuclear power plants abroad than any one else, constructing facilities in Iran, China, India, and Bulgaria. They are also in talks with many other developing countries about the possibility of building reactors. As for the floating reactors, Russian experts say the units have been offered to Persian Gulf states.

VOLGODONSK, Russia, March 18 (Reuters) – Russia will strive to control a quarter of the global nuclear power market and will boost nuclear energy use at home, starting with a $6 billion investment this year, Prime Minister Vladimir Putin said.

Putin said on Thursday Russia should use its competitive advantage to meet a renaissance in global demand for nuclear energy, which has regained popularity worldwide more than two decades after the 1986 disaster at the Chernobyl nuclear plant.

“We can afford to control no less than 25 percent of the global market for construction and servicing nuclear plants,” said Putin. He did not give a timescale for the project.

Putin was chairing a government meeting at the Volgodonsk nuclear power plant, the first such plant built in Russia since the Chernobyl disaster.

“We need to strengthen our position in the global competition,” he said. Russia controls about 20 percent of the market now.

Russia is competing against multinationals from the United States and France in the nuclear sector but is eyeing an alliance with Germany‘s Siemens (SIEGn.DE) to conquer back some of its traditional markets in eastern Europe and Asia.

(Reuters) – Russia’s Vladimir Putin emerges from the biggest ever leak of U.S. diplomatic documents as the “alpha-dog” ruler of a deeply corrupt state dominated by its security forces.

The 58-year-old prime minister is presented by U.S. diplomats as Russia’s most powerful politician, holding the keys to everything from energy deals to Moscow’s Iran policy.

By contrast, President Dmitry Medvedev “plays Robin to Putin’s Batman”, is pale and hesitant and has to get his decisions approved by Putin, according to the cables.

But correspondence from the elite of the U.S. diplomatic corps also casts Putin as a leader plagued by an unmanageable bureaucracy and grappling with ruling a “virtual mafia state” dominated by corrupt businessmen and the security forces.

A cable from the U.S. Embassy in Paris said U.S. Defense Secretary Robert Gates observed on Feb. 8, 2010, that “Russian democracy has disappeared and the government is an oligarchy run by the security services”.

Gates told his French counterpart that “President Medvedev has a more pragmatic vision for Russia than PM Putin, but there has been little real change”, according to the document.

Following the publication of another batch of leaked US diplomatic cables revealed by Wikileaks, Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin and his Italian colleague and friend Silvio Berlusconi denied allegations of mafia-type connections.

Russia denounced leaked cables in which a Spanish prosecutor described the country as a “virtual mafia state” and oil experts suggested Prime Minister Putin had amassed illegal wealth.

In particular, a Switzerland-based firm trading in energy, Gunvor, is said to be under the personal control of Putin. Gunvor representatives denied the claim.

A coded message dated 8 February 2010 cites Spanish prosecutor José Gonzalez as telling US officials that he “cannot differentiate between the activities of the government and organised crime groups”. The telegrams are signed by US Ambassdor to Moscow John Beyerle…

According to another cable, Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi is said to have personally profited from energy deals between Italy and Russia.

The communications were written by former US ambassador Ronald Spogli and his successor in Rome, David Thorne.

Putin made it clear again that Europe and Russia are dependent on each other. He was speaking with German businessmen in Berlin on Friday. They gathered at a business conference organized by the German newspaper Sueddeutsche Zeitung.

“The German public does not like the nuclear power industry for some reason,” Putin said, adding that he would not comment on it. “But I cannot understand what fuel you will take for heating,” he said anyway.

“You do not want gas, you do not develop the nuclear power industry, so you will heat with firewood?” Putin asked, as reported by Itar-Tass. “Then you will have to go to Siberia to buy the firewood there,” he said, adding that Europeans “do not even have firewood.”

The Conservative government’s efforts to sell off Canada’s nuclear power agency secretly collapsed this week after the most likely buyer walked away from the negotiating table.

The government has spent almost two years trying to sell the commercial divisions of Atomic Energy of Canada Ltd. (AECL) that build and maintain nuclear power reactors.

But the agency hasn’t made a reactor sale in more than a decade and the breakdown of talks to sell off AECL leaves taxpayers on the hook for the Crown corporation that last year ran up more than $800 million in red ink.

The government’s failure to reach a deal not only puts the future of AECL in doubt, but also leaves the Canadian nuclear industry and up to 30,000 jobs in limbo…

The CIA persuaded Switzerland to destroy millions of pages of evidence showing how a Pakistani scientist helped Iran, Libya and North Korea acquire sensitive nuclear technology, according to a new book.

“Fallout” by Americans Catherine Collins and Douglas Frantz tells the story of the illicit nuclear procurement network created by Abdul Qadeer Khan, a metallurgist who is widely considered the father of Pakistan’s nuclear weapons programme.

In 2004, Khan admitted to selling Iran, North Korea and Libya uranium enrichment technology that can be used to produce fuel for civilian reactors or atomic weapons. Khan’s movements have been curtailed since his public confession.

Analysts and U.N. officials have said that Khan’s illicit network, which specialised in helping countries skirt international sanctions, created the greatest nuclear proliferation crisis of the atomic age.

For a close-knit circle of Democrats working in politics, Monday morning delivered the second devastating punch. Less than 48 hours after news of the attack on Rep. Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson came word that Ashley Turton was dead following a fire in her BMW on Capitol Hill, the victim of what appeared to be an inconceivably freakish accident...

Turton, 37, a top congressional staffer-turned-lobbyist and mother of three young children, was married to Dan Turton, 43, a senior White House aide. She was less famous than Giffords but no less sought-after inside the political establishment. The Turtons were a power couple in the old-fashioned sense: two heady careers and bright reputations that led each of them from one successful job to the next.

But Ashley and Dan Turton weren’t out there “on the circuit,” as one friend put it – not the cocktail-party kind of power couple, friends said. They preferred a low-key lifestyle, including a tight group of friends in their Capitol Hill neighborhood…

..In January 2009, Dan Turton became Obama’s top liaison to the House, making him a ubiquitous presence on the House side of the Capitol, roaming the halls to field questions from both sides of the aisle and delivering intelligence back to the White House. He became, in the words of lobbyist Steve Elmendorf, “somebody that everybody talked to every day.”..

“Capitol Hill is a small town, and House Democrats are a small community. On top of the Giffords thing, [the Turtons are] just two people who are beloved,” Elmendorf said.

What happened in the predawn hours of Monday morning behind the couple’s house at 800 A St. SE remains perplexing. Ashley Turton apparently left home early to go to her job as a lobbyist with a big day – a $13 billion corporate merger (Progress Energy-Duke Energy) – ahead. Instead, her car crashed into the walls of the garage and caught fire, with flames soon engulfing the structure. Neighbors called authorities at 4:50 a.m., and when firefighters arrived they found her dead in the car.

Duke Energy’s purchase of Progress Energy not only creates the nation’s biggest electricity provider, but it also combines two fans of nuclear power that are eager for more.

Even so, the shocking leap in the price of building nuclear power plants and the national waffling on a U.S. energy policy — we still lack consensus on “clean” coal, natural gas, hydro, solar and wind — raise warning flags on nuclear’s prospects even as these companies insist nukes are key.

Combined, the companies boast six nuclear power plants in the Carolinas and one in Citrus County, generating electricity from 12 nuclear reactors. Together, the companies will be the third largest nationwide in nuclear generation capacity behind Chicago’s Exelon and New Orleans’ Entergy, but ahead of Georgia’s Southern Co. or Florida Power & Light (part of NextEra Energy), two big competitors in the southeastern United States.

In remarks Monday, Duke Energy CEO Jim Rogers and Progress Energy CEO Bill Johnson emphasized that their combined corporate heft will be key to nuclear power expansion. Why? Because the extraordinary costs of nuclear power plant construction make it financially risky for any power companies but the very biggest to afford.

Says Progress Energy’s Johnson, who becomes CEO of the resulting company: “Our size and scale, once combined, position us well for nuclear generation.”

Maybe. Soaring nuclear building expenses are prompting some experts to question whether nukes in the future can competitively produce electricity. And some aging nuclear plants are starting to show wear and tear…

B leak price outlooks for natural gas in North America have wiped the proposed Mackenzie pipeline off the map, according to a recent report by U.S. energy regulators.

The TransCanada Corp. project didn’t figure in the Energy Information Administration’s annual outlook because of costs, said an agency analyst Thursday.

The report suggested natural gas prices wouldn’t support shipping natural gas volumes from Alaska south until 2033, EIA analyst Joe Benneche told the Herald.

“So if the price isn’t high enough to spur along the Alaska, it wouldn’t be high enough to spur along the Mackenzie,” Benneche said.

He noted the Northwest Territories pipeline lacks economies of scale and infrastructure already existing on the North Slope, making it more costly…

The Calgary-based corporation and partner ExxonMobil Corp. have been promoting a massive natural gas pipeline to bring prolific (Alaska) North Slope natural gas to southern markets by 2020.

However, high construction costs and low prices will likely shelve the $40-billion project and its rival the $20-billion Denali pipeline until 2033 as demand for natural gas in the Lower 48 states is met by cheaper, more accessible volumes, according to the EIA report.

The project would snake through Alaska, Yukon and British Columbia to feed into Alberta’s well-established natural gas pipeline network and facilities.

The U.S. Energy Information Administration earlier this month concludes the price of gas won’t be high enough to make construction economical until about 2035.

Dec 16 (Reuters) – Canada’s government will discuss early next year whether to sign off on a regulator’s approval of a proposed Arctic gas pipeline, Environment Minister John Baird told Reuters on Thursday.

Baird, who described the Mackenzie pipeline project as exciting for Canada’s North and the Canadian economy, said Ottawa wanted “to jump the next hurdle in getting the regulatory approvals completed”.

He said Natural Resources Minister Christian Paradis would come to cabinet in the new year with a recommendation as to whether the government should give the final go-ahead. Baird declined to say when Ottawa would issue a ruling. (Reporting by David Ljunggren; editing by Rob Wilson)

There’s an episode of the 1980s British sitcom, Yes, Minister, in which Jim Hacker, the minister for Administrative Affairs, goes to visit England’s most efficient hospital, a new institution in North London known as St. Edward’s. While touring the facility, the minister learns the reason for its efficiency – the wards are fully staffed, but the hospital has no patients. “Having patients around would be no help at all,” he is assured.

It’s the same with Canada’s Northern Pipeline Agency. For 32 years, since it was set up in 1978, the NPA has been a very efficient bureaucracy largely because it is a pipeline agency without a pipeline.

The NPA doesn’t have anything to do with the Mackenzie Valley pipeline (MVP) – approved last Thursday after more than 30 years of wrangling, cause-pleading, environmental hysterics and political correctness – at least not directly. Yet the reason the agency remains pipeline-less more than three decades after its creation, speaks to why the MVP approval very likely means very little: Ultimately major northern natural-gas pipelines don’t exist because they don’t make economic sense…

When Jim Prentice took his seat in the federal cabinet, the buzz was that he was the guy who was going to get Mackenzie across the finish line. Prentice had everything, it appeared, to make it happen. As someone who had worked with First Nations on the legal side, he understood the challenges. He had very good connections into the oilpatch, which meant he could access any expertise at a moment’s notice. Hopes were high. But when Prentice left politics in November, whatever hopes that seemed to exist for Mackenzie ever moving ahead evaporated.

The real issue for the NGOs may be that they want the U.S. to move away from oil, period. In a way, the relative ecological filthiness of Alberta synthetic petroleum is beside the point; what makes that oil a special threat is that its abundance will delay America’s transformation to a post-oil economy. And pipelines, which represent practically irreversible multi-decade supply commitments, are an attractive choke point for advocates of the anti-fossil transition and NGO veterans in the Obama administration and Congress. Enbridge’s spill thus thrusts a poorly timed elbow into the breadbasket of its sister pipeline company, TransCanada Corp., which is struggling to win U.S. approval for an extension of its Keystone system.

The Keystone line currently runs from Alberta to the oil crossroads of the continent at Cushing, Okla. The idea behind “Keystone XL” is to open new capacity for Alberta’s production by reaching out from Cushing to the Gulf Coast (where some refineries are designed to handle similar heavy oil from Venezuela, a political basket case whose output is declining). XL’s fate technically lies with the State Department, which issued a favourable draft environmental impact statement (EIS) on Apr. 20..

CALGARY, Alberta -(Dow Jones)- Plans to expand the flow of crude into the U.S. from Canada’s oil sands faced mounting political pressure Tuesday as the chairman of the U.S. House of Representatives energy committee, Rep. Henry Waxman (D-Calif.), said he’s opposed to the expansion of TransCanada’s Corp.’s ( TRP, TRP.T) Keystone pipeline and urged U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton to reject the company’s request for a international building permit.

Calling Keystone “a multi-billion dollar investment to expand our reliance on the dirtiest source of transportation fuel currently available,” Waxman said he was concerned that using oil-sands oil would increase U.S. greenhouse gas emissions..

Waxman joins 49 other Democratic representatives who signed a similar letter to Clinton last month asking her to reject the pipeline expansion.

The first phase of the $12 billion Keystone project began operation on July 1, shipping 435,000 barrels of crude oil from Canada’s oil sands region into the U.S. Through a $7 billion expansion, TransCanada plans to increase the flow to 1.1 million barrels per day, which would roughly double the amount of oil sands being shipped into the U.S. from last year’s amount, and extend the line to the heavy crude refineries on the Gulf Coast by 2013.

Expansion of TransCanada Corp.’ s Keystone oilsands pipeline — already under fire from some U.S. legislators — is facing another hurdle, this time from a key U.S. government environmental agency.

The Environmental Protection Agency says further study is required since the current review of the project to extend the pipeline to the U.S. Gulf Coast falls short in identifying all potential environmental impacts, including higher carbon emissions by supporting oilsands operations.

The issues are raised in a letter to the U.S. State Department, which has yet to approve the $7-billion expansion to the existing Keystone pipeline that would ship 510,000 barrels per day of bitumen from Alberta to refiners in the Gulf Coast by 2013.

The EPA concerns add to growing opposition to the project by environmental groups and U.S. lawmakers — most recently U.S. political heavyweight Henry Waxman, chair of the U.S. Congress’s powerful energy and commerce committee two weeks ago.

That has sparked a defence by Alberta Premier Ed Stelmach, who responded with his own letter to Secretary of State Hillary Clinton. The province also took out an ad in the Washington Post touting Alberta oil as a stable and secure source of energy.

In its submission, the U.S. environmental agency is calling for more analysis and information on the purpose and need for the project, as well as the potential for higher greenhouse gas emissions.

“We estimate that GHG emissions from Canadian oilsands crude would be 82 per cent greater than the average crude refined in the U.S., on a well-to-tank basis,” the agency said in its submission.

Total emissions from the fully completed pipeline could reach 27 million tonnes, “roughly equivalent to annual CO2 emissions of several coal-fired power plants,” it said…

TransCanada said it is “not appropriate” for the Department of State to review greenhouse gas impacts of the pipeline, as it does not drive oilsands development.

Federal agency(Hillary Clinton) adds 90 days to Keystone XL process

Federal officials have delayed a decision on a permit for a $7 billion oil pipeline from Canada to the Gulf of Mexico.

The State Department said Monday it’s adding 90 days to the comment period for other federal agencies on whether TransCanada Corp.’s Keystone XL pipeline is in the national interest.

Keystone XL would move oil from Canada through Montana, along the border of North Dakota and South Dakota to Nebraska. The pipeline would then hook up with another pipeline in Kansas and move oil through Oklahoma and Texas.

The comment period had been scheduled to end Sept. 15. It will now extend until 90 days after the State Department has issued an environmental impact statement on the pipeline.

The department didn’t say when the environmental statement would be finished.

Reuters) – For Calgary-based TransCanada, a recent Michigan oil spill from a pipeline operated by its rival Enbridge Inc couldn’t have come at a worse time.

The spill threatens to tilt public opinion against TransCanada’s $12 billion pipeline system that could ultimately stretch from Alberta to Texas…

By 2013, TransCanada’s Keystone system could deliver 1.1 million barrels-per-day (bpd) along a route from Alberta to coastal Texas. But that requires U.S. approval for Keystone XL, a $7 billion, 1,661 mile (2,673 km) Montana-to-Texas addition to Keystone’s existing network, which can run 435,000 bpd to Illinois. “The recent spills probably won’t derail the (TransCanada) pipeline expansion, but could add lots of bureaucracy before it proceeds,” said oil consultant John Brodman, a former Department of Energy official.

“I’d expect even more scrutiny, more investigations and more pipeline inspections going forward.”

U.S. lawmakers have already scheduled two sets of congressional hearings on pipeline safety for next month, one of them in response to Enbridge’s Michigan spill. Last week, protesters gathered outside a Chicago event attended by President Barack Obama, demanding he nix Keystone XL.

The State Department, which must approve Keystone XL, recently extended the project’s federal review period by 90 days, into December. The Environmental Protection Agency is reviewing the plans.

The National Wildlife Federation recently identified more than 2,000 U.S. pipeline incidents over the last decade, including scores of oil and gas spills, explosions, and several deaths.

Keystone XL will traverse Nebraska’s Ogallala aquifer, which supplies water to almost 30 percent of farmland in the U.S. Midwest. The Enbridge leak, which briefly threatened to reach Lake Michigan, is a reminder of how serious a spill could be, environmentalists say.

“The spill in Michigan shows us that pipeline accidents happen, even when the industry is regulated,” said Sierra Club’s Kate Colarulli.

But other analysts doubt the Michigan spill will delay Keystone XL at all.

Despite U.S. concerns, Canada’s U.S. crude shipments have risen almost 30 percent from a decade ago, and it is piping in 2.5 million bpd this year, or a fourth of U.S. imports.

That makes Canada the undisputed top U.S. Supplier…

Alberta officials have said the United States may consume more than 4 million bpd of its bituminous heavy crude-tar sands within two decades, assuming pipelines like Keystone XL are built.

Meanwhile, other perennial U.S. suppliers have cut their shipments. Saudi cargoes to the United States fell to a 23 year low near 1 million barrels a day in 2009.

U.S.-bound cargoes from Latin America are dwindling. Venezuela shipped 1 million bpd last year, down a third from a decade ago. Mexico supplied 1.2 million bpd, a 13-year low.

Unless U.S. policy-makers move aggressively to wean the country off foreign oil, analysts say greater reliance on Canadian oilsands crude appears inevitable.

Environmental groups and landowners, upset by last month’s oil spill in Michigan, are urging the Obama administration to deny a proposal for an oil pipeline that would go from the Montana-Canada border to refineries along the Texas Gulf Coast.

Alberta-based TransCanada’s proposed 1,661-mile Keystone XL pipeline would link up with its existing 2,151-mile Keystone pipeline, which began operations in June, and go through Montana, South Dakota, Nebraska, Kansas, Oklahoma and Texas.

Opponents say last month’s spill underscored the dangers of the United States’ reliance on fossil fuels. A pipeline ruptured on July 25 and spilled nearly a million gallons of crude oil into a tributary of the Kalamazoo River in southwestern Michigan, according to Environmental Protection Agency estimates.

Environmental groups such as the Sierra Club, Friends of the Earth and the Natural Resources Defense Council opposed the Keystone XL project even before the Michigan spill, but the incident has increased scrutiny and elevated concerns.

Groups opposing the expanded pipeline have popped up onFacebook. Last week, protesters demonstrated outside Chicago’s Palmer House Hilton hotel, where President Obama was attending a Democratic fundraiser, and hung a banner over Obama’s Lake Shore Drive route that read, “Pres. Obama: Stop the Keystone Pipeline, Stop the Tar Sands.”

NEBRASKA SANDHILLS – For those who feel drawn toward the ranching life in the soft days of spring, this area is a magnificent magnet.

Cows trot thankfully out of their winter quarters toward oceans of green grass, spinning windmills and water so abundant that it literally oozes through the soil surface.

They clatter into long livestock trailers as eagerly as morning commuters on their way to the first day of a dream job. Their latest calves, new to this annual ritual, wonder what it’s all about.

At the start of the 2010 grazing season, there’s something else that’s new to even the most veteran ranchers in north-central Nebraska.

As the U.S. Gulf Coast reels from the effects of an oil disaster, TransCanada is positioning itself to bury an oil pipeline through fragile landscape and over the deep end of the largest underground aquifer in the United States.

Those who propose to lay the 36-inch diameter Keystone XL line four feet down from Canada through Nebraska all the way to Gulf refineries say this is a big step toward securing the energy future.

TransCanada says that connection can be had with no significant threat to natural resources.

It foresees nothing more than a temporary intrusion on the latest of ranching generations.

The same goes for tunneling under the Niobrara River, just downstream from its scenic river designation…

“No way.”

That was Teri Taylor’s first reaction to the news that the pipeline would cross the far-flung pasture setting near Stuart where she was born 57 years ago.

“I know what it’s like to reclaim that ground even on a small scale,” she said.

Husband Dennis Taylor, 60, and son Tim hunker down with her around a kitchen table 14 miles down gravel roads from Nebraska Highway 20 and 18 miles from the town of Stuart, population 650.

Dennis Taylor speaks anxiously of the constant erosion threat to Sandhills dune areas called “blowouts,” the direction of the pipe route and the patterns of prevailing winds.

“The northwest wind will blow that pipe bare in two years,” he predicts.

“Kind of the elephant in the room,” says Tim Taylor, who came home to be the family’s herd veterinarian in 2005, “is the spill in the Gulf.”

The Taylors find little comfort in the choices of signing an easement for the three places where the pipe will cross their property or becoming victims of the pipeline builder’s right of eminent domain.

“If we don’t go along in timely fashion with settling an easement,” Tim Taylor says, “we can end up with condemnation and still end up with a pipeline.”

Note: Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, has pushed the XL Pipeline decision until after the November 8, 2010 Congressional Elections.

This is not insignificant. One of President Obama’s closest advisors Press Secretary Robert Gibbs in angering House Leader Nancy Pelosi said the Democratic Party could lose control of Congress in the November elections.

The approval of XL Pipeline under SS Hillary Clinton is imminent.
